Oghenakpobo "Pobo" Efekoro, a graduate of I.S. 318 in Brooklyn, is organizing the first annual "New York for After School" volunteer day as part of the annual Make A Difference Day. Pobo's vision for this event is to draw attention to the need for community volunteers to help create and grow successful after school programs in schools throughout New York City. Pobo and other national chess champions are committed to helping to support chess programs at other schools. For them, it's not just about winning. They want to use this event as a way to give back to the community and advocate for after school programs. They will use the event as an opportunity to get I.S. 318 graduates and community volunteers engaged in supporting after school programs, tutoring and mentoring. They will also use the event as an opportunity to ask volunteers to sign a petition urging elected officials to continue to support after school program funding. Pobo believes the event can be used to connect with kids ages 5-10 and older to get them interested in chess and other activities that build skills and can be constructive towards the kids' future.A press conference, co-hosted with the I.S. 318 Chess Team and the non-profit Afterschool Alliance, will be held starting at 9:00 AM ito kick-off the event. Volunteers will package chess sets (and possibly other items like art supplies) to be delivered to three or more public, primary schools in New York that don't have chess teams and lack after school resources, providing them with the basic resources as well as volunteer chess mentors needed to build and support volunteer-driven after school programs. The event will be held at public school I.S. 318 in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday, October 27 (Make A Difference Day). Pobo, a high school student who is now entering his junior year, and the I.S. 318 chess team (the national champsions) are featured in the documentary film Brooklyn Castle (www.BrooklynCastle.com) that opened in theaters in New York City on October 19 and has since expanded to other cities. Pobo, the team and the movie were featured on NBC's TODAY Show on Friday, October 19.
